10-Digit Dialing - Coming June 17th
Updated: May 18th, 2006

Starting June 17, 2006, people working or living in the 519 area code in Ontario will have to dial 10 digits - the area code followed by the 7-digit phone number for all local calls. For our customers using dial-up service, the phone number entered in your internet connection will have to be corrected to use the 10-digit format. You can get more information about the change in your local calling by going to www.dial10.ca. If you require assistance in changing these settings on your computer, please contact our technical support, we are available to assist you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Our contact info can be found here.

Jet 2 Net Webmail - Service Upgrade
Updated: August 17th, 2005

Today we have posted an update to the Jet 2 Net webmail service, mostly to integrate the webmail interface more closely with our website. This upgrade should make the service run more quickly, and we are happy to announce that the spell checking service is now fully functional. Composing new messages will now be within the page itself instead of in a popup window, and a notification will appear to notify you that your message was sent successfully. Hopefully our users will enjoy these improvements, but should you experience any issues, please feel free to contact technical support for assistance. Additionally, users who have bookmarked the webmail link will have to update these links in their browsers, as the URL for the webmail site has changed.

Since the webpage upgrade last month we have noticed that the free antivirus scan we have posted here, Trend Micro's "HouseCall", is incompatible with our recommended Mozilla Firefox browser. That is, we have discovered the version of HouseCall on Trend Micro's North American website doesn't work with Firefox. However, their European counterparts do. So if you would like to use this very useful virus scanning tool, use the link supplied here. Sorry for any inconvenience, but as soon as their North American site offers a Firefox-compatible version, we will let you know.

We have made a few minor changes to our site, the most important is the Virus Alert section on the right column of this page. This news feed, provided by Trend Micro - the makers of PC-Cillin Antivirus, shows the top 10 current virus threats. It also has links for the latest virus hoaxes and their free online virus scanner "Housecall".

Below that we have added a "Recommended Downloads" section with useful programs that we feel will be to the benefit of our customers. As listed in a post below, we have a link for Firefox 1.0, which in our opinion is the best web browser currently available for Windows users. Since then, Mozilla has also released their Thunderbird 1.0 e-mail client, which is an excellent alternative to Outlook Express. All of the programs listed are completely free as well as fully funtional. Another nice utility is Trillian 3.0 Basic if you have friends who you chat with using different IM programs. It is an all-in-one IM client that supports ICQ, MSN, Yahoo, and AOL instant messenger services all in one easy-to-use and very configurable package. There are plenty of skins available to change the appearance of Trillian, as well as plugins to build in features like weather info, news, stock info, mail checking, and many more. We hope these programs help to enhance your online experience.

We are now pleased to offer 128Kbps (Basic) DSL service. This service, meant more for faster browsing & e-mail, is meant as a more cost-effective high speed solution. Though not as fast as the regular services, it is still an "always on" connection that frees up your phone line so you can talk on the phone while surfing the internet. If you're looking for something that will speed up your internet experience, and allow you to make phone calls while staying connected, but not ready to pay the $44.95 for full-speed DSL, this may be the option you've been waiting for! Call for more details!

Updated: November 9th, 2004

Tuesday, November 9th is a good day for the internet. Today the Mozilla Organization (a non-profit breakoff from Netscape) announced the official release of their new next-generation web browser: Firefox 1.0. It was developed due to the need for a quick, stable, and modern web browser with one very important factor: no more viruses, pop-ups, or browser hijacks (as are now becoming rampant on Microsoft's Internet Explorer) Unlike the previous Netscape & Mozilla browsers, there is no major learning curve or usability difference between Firefox and IE. The interface is intuitive, as well as offering something most browsers today lack, tabs. Tabbing means, that instead of opening browser after browser to view multiple pages, you can simply open a new page within the same browser window... these different pages are separated by.. you guessed it... tabs. Firefox will automatically grab your favorites and settings from IE upon installation, and after maybe re-downloading a few plugins. (which it also has a built-in autoinstall feature if it detects that you are missing something like flash, for example) Another great feature is its pop-up blocker, which until recently, IE did not have without downloading a toolbar. (Google or Yahoo, for example) Essentially, without going into a full review, it is the next BIG thing when it comes to browsing the internet. You can either read up on it and download it from the mozilla site, or from our server here. At only 4.5Mb it's roughly a quarter the size of IE, but well worth the download. Also, Mozilla is working on their own standalone mail program, Thunderbird, which is intended to be an Outlook Express replacement. Though it is still in its beta (non-official release) version its built in spam filtering functions and enhanced virus protection capabilities make it well worth checking out. Plus, it is only going to get better.

In order to protect our users from the Netsky.P virus epidemic, Jet 2 Net has opted to disable support for password-protected ZIP archives through our mail server. ZIP archives are a popular format with which to compress files for easier transfer over the internet. We do not discourage the use of this format, however the Netsky virus has abused the popularity of this file-type to spread itself. Our virus scanning system will simply delete any e-mail containing a password-protected ZIP file. No bounce notification will be sent, since most Netsky e-mails are spread using false or incorrect addresses. Standard ZIP files will simply be scanned and delivered normally. This is being done to improve the overall performance of the mail system, and the protection of our users. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact us via e-mail at tech@jet2.net with your thoughts.

Thank you and have a great day,
